Interdisciplinary Research Support
"Defining the Nutritional Requirements of the
Developing Intestinal Ecosystem"
The Division of Nutritional Sciences was selected as the 2005 recipient of the Freedom to Discover Nutrition Research Grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The $500,000 unrestricted funding will be used to support innovative, discovery research focusing on complex interaction between the intestine and commensal and pathogenic bacteria utilizing state-of-the-art approaches and novel animal models of health and disease. Funding also will be utilized to expand our basic and pre-clinical research into the clinical setting and augment training of medical students and residents. We will increase interactions with the medical community at the University of Illinois and the nutrition researchers within the Division of Nutritional Sciences through collaborative research projects that will foster the translation of our basic research from bench to bedside.
